Keystroke, keystroke, button smash
Type, type, typing fast
Handwriting has turned to trash
Cursive didn’t last
What a shame
I always liked
How I signed my name
And now I’ll have to wait
For fortune and fame-
Us on chutes and ladders
Falling to climb
But this ain’t a game
And climbing can hurt
While leaves float softly
To the ground, gracefully lay
Fortunate with the flowers all around
Growing taller, all the growing pains
The piles, piles and sacks
Of ideas, work, trinkets and play
Great or lame
Dollar signs exclaim my name

I’m hanging by a burning thread
Collecting each case along the way
On that paper train
All aboard, destination fortune and fame
And the road is twisting up ahead

I’m hanging by a burning thread
On that paper train
Burning diamonds like they’re coals
Trying to keep pace
It’s all right there, in my face
Got to catch that train
To fortune and fame
Fortune and fame

I look down at my wrist
Fifty one millimeters
Sitting a – round
As big as a sundial-ed-in
My Nixon says go
And I turn on one-O-one
Drive around the bend
It’s hard getting grown
Becoming more, yet less known
Merge on seventy, heading home
The needle turns
And hits eighty-five
Loops like vultures and sharks
Circling bikes at the velodrome
Nothing else exists
I’ll call you on my mobile phone
While trees and cars blur
In the review mirror
Where fortune and fame come in
A door is held, here’s your coat
Could you sign this for my boy, he’s ten?
Here’s a pen
Dollar signs exclaim
My scribbled name
Fortune and Fame

I’m hanging by a burning thread
Collecting each case along the way
On that paper train
All aboard, destination fortune and fame
And the road is twisting up ahead

I’m hanging by a burning thread
On that paper train
Burning diamonds like they’re coals
Trying to keep pace
It’s all right there, in my face
Got to catch that train
To fortune and fame
Fortune and fame

I’m hanging by a burning thread
Collecting each case along the way
On that paper train
All aboard, destination fortune and fame
And the road is twisting up ahead

I’m hanging by a burning thread
On that paper train
Burning diamonds like they’re coals
Trying to keep pace
It’s all right there, in my face
Got to catch that train
To fortune and fame
Fortune and fame
